Who we are

For the past 30 years, HACAN has been on the ground with families, providing psychosocial classes, food, clothing, and enrichment opportunities for families. HACAN has worked alongside policymakers to reduce the incidences of child abuse in Northern Virginia. Over the years we have provided education, material support, and more to thousands of families because of our supporters.

Recently both on the news and in our community we have seen the tensions facing immigrants. Many of the families we serve are feeling the stress of these political conflicts on a personal and communal level and we know this pressure is directly affecting the emotional well-being of the children we serve.

In 2017 we are serving roughly 300 children a month through our three main programs:

Fortaleciendo la Familia (Strengthening Families Program): More than 260 people attend a weekly parent support and educational meeting at one of four sites in Fairfax County (Holmes Run and Glasgow Middle Schools, and Falls Church and Fairfax High Schools).
Morning STAR (Saturday Tutoring Program): 34 children, grades K-6 attend weekly sessions where they get extra help in math, writing, and spelling.
STAR (Students Training in Advocacy and Responsibility): Focused on leadership skills for High School Students, STAR participants receive training to be future leaders. Many of the STAR participants serve as tutors for the younger children in the Morning STAR program.

Please help us mitigate some of the stress that the children in our community are feeling. Your contribution now will have a big impact. There are several ways you can help:
